A practical month-end bookkeeping checklist.
A practical month-end workflow: gather records, review transactions, reconcile accounts and prepare a useful handoff to your accountant.
1. Gather the period’s records
Collect bank and credit card statements, sales invoices, supplier bills and receipts. Keep a list of missing documents so the person reviewing the books knows what is outstanding.
2. Review transaction coding
Check payees, dates, amounts and account categories. Review suggested matches before accepting them, and look for duplicate entries or payments recorded without the related invoice.
3. Reconcile bank and credit card accounts
Use statements covering the same closing date as your review. Compare the statement balances with your reconciliations and investigate differences instead of inserting an unexplained balancing entry.
4. Review amounts owed and owing
Check unpaid customer invoices and outstanding supplier bills. Confirm that payments and credits have been applied, and identify the items that need follow-up.
5. Inspect reports and unresolved questions
Read the profit and loss report and balance sheet. Look into unusual movements, unexpected balances and missing support. Keep questions for your accountant alongside the relevant records.
6. Prepare a handoff
Save reconciliation reports and supporting documents with the period’s financial reports. Sumlora offers financial reports, a trial balance, CaseWare exports and a year-end package; included detail depends on the plan and available records.
